WHAT IS MODULAR KITCHEN?

A modular kitchen is a kitchen built from pre-fabricated cabinet units called modules that are assembled together to create a fully functional, customised kitchen space. Unlike traditional site-built carpentry where everything is made on location from raw materials, modular kitchens use factory-finished units that slot together precisely.

The result is a kitchen that looks more polished, requires less on-site construction time, is easier to maintain, and because the modules are standardised is more cost-effective than fully custom built-in carpentry. Every drawer, every cabinet, every corner unit is planned in advance using 3D kitchen design software, so you see exactly what you are getting before a single cabinet is installed.

Whether you are designing a compact 2BHK kitchen or a spacious home with a luxury island layout, modular kitchen design gives you the precision and flexibility that traditional carpentry simply cannot match.

Modular kitchen layouts which one is right for your home?

The layout you choose depends on the size and shape of your kitchen, where your windows and doors are, and how you like to cook. Here are the five most common layouts:

Straight kitchen layout

All cabinets and appliances run along a single wall. This is the most space-efficient layout for very compact kitchens typically under 50 sq ft. It works well when the kitchen is long and narrow, and is the most affordable layout to design and install. The limitation is limited counter space, but smart overhead cabinet design can compensate for this.

L-shaped modular kitchen design

The most popular layout in Indian homes. Cabinets run along two adjacent walls forming an L shape. This creates a natural work triangle between the stove, sink, and refrigerator reducing unnecessary movement while cooking. Modern L-shaped modular kitchen design with premium acrylic finishes is currently the most requested style we receive, especially for 2BHK flats. Works well in kitchens from 55 to 90 sq ft.

U-shaped kitchen layout

Cabinets on three walls. Maximum storage and counter space. Best for kitchens above 80 sq ft where a full U is possible without feeling cramped. Ideal for families who cook elaborate meals or need to store a large number of kitchen items. Slightly more expensive than L-shape due to the additional cabinetry.

Parallel kitchen layout

Two parallel countertops facing each other. Excellent for narrow but long kitchens where an L-shape is not possible. Creates a natural workflow and surprisingly generous counter space. Common in older buildings where kitchen proportions are long and thin.

Island kitchen layout luxury modular kitchen design

A central island unit in the middle of the kitchen. This is the definition of a luxury modular kitchen design featuring spacious island layouts it provides extra prep space, can double as a breakfast bar, and dramatically elevates the look of any kitchen. Requires a minimum kitchen size of around 150 sq ft to work comfortably. Increasingly popular in premium apartments and independent homes.

Materials and finishes - making the right choice

The finish you choose for your kitchen shutters affects both the look and the durability. Here is an honest comparison of the four main options available in modular kitchen design:

FinishLookDurabilityMaintenanceBest for
LaminateMatt or textured, many patternsGood — 10–12 yearsEasy to cleanBudget-conscious homeowners
AcrylicHigh gloss, reflects lightVery good — scratch resistantVery easyModern kitchens, small spaces
PU (Polyurethane)Smooth matt or glossExcellent — 15–20 yearsEasiest of allPremium kitchens, long-term value
Membrane / PVCTextured, wood-look optionsGoodModerateRustic or wood-look styles

Designer tip: For most Indian kitchens where cooking involves high heat, steam, and oil, we recommend acrylic or PU finish. Acrylic gives you the high-gloss look that makes small kitchens feel larger by reflecting light and it wipes clean effortlessly. PU is the premium choice for homeowners who want something that will look perfect 15 years from now with minimal effort.

For countertops, quartz is our top recommendation it is non-porous, heat resistant, does not stain, and requires no sealing. Granite is a close second and more budget-friendly. Avoid marble for kitchen countertops in Indian homes it stains easily and requires constant maintenance.

Modular kitchen design for small spaces and 2BHK homes

One of the most common searches we see is “small room modular kitchen design near me” and it reflects a very real challenge. Most Indian flats especially 1BHK and 2BHK apartments have kitchens between 40 and 80 sq ft. Designing for this constraint requires specific expertise that not every designer has.

Here are the approaches we use specifically for compact kitchens:

Floor-to-ceiling overhead cabinets — most kitchens waste the space above the standard cabinet height. Tall overhead units that reach the ceiling dramatically increase storage without using any additional floor area

Pull-out drawers instead of shelves — pull-out systems give you access to the full depth of a cabinet, compared to fixed shelves where things get lost at the back

Corner units with carousel mechanisms — corner spaces are typically dead space in a kitchen. Carousel or magic corner systems turn them into highly functional storage

Acrylic or gloss finishes — high-gloss finishes reflect light and make compact kitchens feel significantly larger and more open

Under-counter appliance integration — built-in ovens, dishwashers, and refrigerators keep the kitchen looking clean and save counter space

2BHK modular kitchen designer who has worked on dozens of compact spaces will know instinctively where to find storage you did not know existed. This experience is impossible to fake and it shows in the final result.

How much does modular kitchen design cost?

Modular kitchen pricing depends on three things — the size of your kitchen, the layout, and the finish you choose. Here is a realistic cost guide based on actual completed projects:

Designer tips - getting the most from your kitchen design

After 8 years of kitchen projects, here are the tips we give every client before they start:

  • Plan your storage before your aesthetics. Storage needs should drive the layout. Once storage is sorted, the aesthetics follow naturally. Many homeowners do it the other way around and regret it.
  • Do not underestimate lighting. Under-cabinet lights transform a kitchen. They cost relatively little but make the kitchen feel premium and make work surfaces easier and safer to use. Always include lighting in your kitchen brief.
  • Keep the work triangle tight. The distance between your stove, sink, and refrigerator should be as short as possible. Every extra step adds up over thousands of cooking sessions.
  • Choose hardware that lasts. Soft-close hinges and drawer channels may cost slightly more but they prevent the single biggest complaint about kitchens a few years after installation — noisy, stiff, or broken shutters and drawers.
  • Invest in a good chimney and get the duct position right from day one. Moving a chimney duct after installation is expensive and disruptive. Plan its position in the design stage.

If you are also planning to redesign your living space while the kitchen work is underway, our living room interior design service covers TV walls, false ceilings, flooring, and furniture layout all coordinated with your kitchen to create a cohesive look throughout your home.
If you are planning to redesign your bedroom our bedroom interior design service covers wardrobe, flooring and layout coordinated with your kitchen to create a beautiful match

Frequently asked questions about modular kitchen design

A modular kitchen uses pre-fabricated cabinet units that are assembled together, while a regular (or traditional) kitchen is built entirely on-site from raw materials. Modular kitchens are more precise, faster to install, easier to maintain, and typically look more polished. They also allow for better space planning because every unit is designed in advance using 3D software. Traditional carpentry is more flexible for unusual shapes but takes longer and the quality depends entirely on the individual carpenter's skill.

Most modular kitchen projects are completed in 10–15 days from the date installation begins. This includes carpentry, countertop installation, and hardware fitting. If civil work such as wall tiling, plumbing changes, or electrical modifications is also needed, add 3–5 extra days. The design and planning phase — site visit, 3D design, and approval — takes about 5–7 days before installation starts.

For kitchens under 55 sq ft, a straight layout is the most practical. For kitchens between 55 and 80 sq ft, an L-shaped layout gives you the best balance of storage and workflow. If your kitchen is narrow and long, a parallel layout works very well. The key for small kitchens is maximising vertical storage with floor-to-ceiling overhead cabinets, using pull-out drawer systems, and choosing acrylic or gloss finishes to make the space feel larger.

For most Indian homes where cooking involves high heat, steam, and oil acrylic or PU finish is our recommendation. Acrylic is scratch resistant, easy to clean, gives a beautiful high-gloss look, and is competitively priced. PU (polyurethane) is the most durable option it resists heat, moisture, and scratches better than any other finish and looks perfect 15 years later with minimal maintenance. Laminate is a good budget option but requires more careful cleaning around the kitchen.

Yes we provide full 3D kitchen design renders before any work or payment begins. You see your kitchen from every angle, with accurate colours, materials, and storage layout. If you want any changes, we revise the design until you are completely satisfied. Only after you approve the 3D design and the written quote does the project proceed.

Absolutely! 2BHK kitchen design is one of our most common projects. The typical 2BHK kitchen in a Mumbai flat is between 60 and 90 sq ft, which is ideal for an L-shaped or U-shaped modular kitchen. We specialise in making compact kitchens feel spacious and well-organised through smart storage planning and the right material choices. We will assess your specific kitchen during the free site visit and recommend the best layout for your space and budget.

We recommend quartz for most kitchens it is non-porous, so it does not absorb spills or stains, is heat resistant, does not need sealing, and is extremely easy to clean. For homeowners on a tighter budget, granite is an excellent alternative it is durable, widely available, and looks beautiful. We advise against marble for kitchen countertops in most Indian homes because it is porous, stains easily from turmeric and oil, and requires regular sealing and careful maintenance.

Yes we handle the complete kitchen project as a single package. Our in-house team covers carpentry, countertop installation, wall tiling, plumbing rough-ins, electrical points, and chimney duct work. You deal with one team for the entire kitchen project no separate contractors for each trade. This saves time, keeps costs transparent, and means accountability is clear throughout.

Yes. We provide manufacturer warranty on all materials typically 1 to 5 years depending on the brand and material. We also offer our own installation warranty covering any fitting, hinge, drawer channel, or joint issue that arises after installation. If anything goes wrong within the warranty period our team comes back and fixes it at no additional charge.
